Vocalic r can be tricky for some kids! Vocalic r is a vowel next to the r consonant, like ‘ar’, ‘er’, ‘air’ ‘ear’, ‘ire’, and ‘or’. Often times kids will be better at some vocalic r’s than others. This kiddo is great at ‘ar’ words but really struggles with ‘er’ words. So we practiced getting his mouth in position first by using a mirror and then smiling. Parents- if your child is struggling with a sound, have them look in a mirror so they can see what their mouths are doing. This can help a lot.

Adding a consonant ending to ‘or’ can be especially tricky for some kids. It’s a lot of movement within a word when you’ve just mastered vocalic ‘r’, and it can take a lot of practice to master the motor planning involved. I’ve found holding out the ‘r’ sound slightly before adding the final consonant can help a lot.
