Hitters don’t need to be machines. Yes we want certain consistencies, but what the back foot does doesn’t have to be the same every swing. Benintendi typically has a small kickback or he keeps his toe in contact with the ground. On this particular swing, he was early, recognized it and then did all he could to delay his hips from opening. Hence the aggressive kickback. This allowed him to stay on the plane of pitch, barrel it up, and get a single to left center.

Hip hinge is crucial to have at launch position (aka heel plant). Sometimes it’s hard for hitters to create hip hinge as they stride forward (a lot of good hitters do!) so the best option for a hitter who struggled getting into a good hinge is to either start in a hinge hinged stance or create hip hinge like Harper does here!

Many elite hitters (while not mandatory) have internal hip rotation in their load. The front hip turns inward. Think of it like getting momentum or a “head start” with your lower half. For hitters that need that little extra movement to get their hips rolling, this would be a great part to add to their swing. The amount of internal rotation is dependent on age, athletic ability, and what the hitter is comfortable with.

Have you been taught to take your barrel straight down to the ball like this? Feel versus real. That’s the name of the game here. Many hitters “feel” like they’re doing a particular movement, when in actuality they are doing something very different. While swinging down on the ball may be a cue for you that works, we don’t actually want to have this type of path to the ball. We don’t see it with elite hitters. Tag someone who needs to see this!
