Slip casting is a multi-day process that we use to form a number of our shapes, including teapots and mugs. The first step is mixing up the slip. After that, the slip is poured into molds. Once it’s in the mold, the slip must sit, in order for the plaster of the mold to dry out the clay and cause it to form a sort of shell. The amount of time each piece sits depends on how thick the walls should be. Once the walls reach the desired thickness, the excess slip is poured out and reused. After that,

Slip casting at home without any equipment is totally doable. I did for almost 3 years with just buckets and pitchers and was able to make it work, but oh boy is this machine a game changer for me. I love how long the hose is, so I can cast on any surface in the studio, and move it to drain over the basin once it’s ready! For really big molds, I pour them directly on the slip table rack so I don’t have to lift them, or cary them full of slip before pouring out! Check out my last reel if you want
