Today marks the 36th anniversary of the successful re-introduction of red wolves in the wild. Four pairs of red wolves were released in the forests and marshes of eastern North Carolina. Once spread across the U.S. Southeast, these animals were persecuted with such intensity that in 1980 the species was declared extinct in the wild.
