Google is building a data center in southern Minnesota, the tech giant announced on Tuesday. Google is partnering with Xcel Energy on the project.

"What Google is doing is ensuring that when we show up, we aren't putting additional costs on other ratepayers," its head of data center energy told CNBC.

Form Energy's iron-air batteries will store wind and solar power to keep the data center running 24/7.
